Is SafetyWing the Best Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads?

Last Updated: February 1, 2022 · Digital Nomad

SafetyWing—is it the best travel insurance for digital nomads?

As a long-time digital nomad (been at it since 2015!), insurance is (or was) a constant worry. I knew I needed something because going without it while trekking on active volcanoes in Guatemala or road-tripping in Mexico or living in Nepal for a year or going on any sort of adventure (even in my own backyard) is just plain risky. Duh! Travel is unpredictable.

Luckily, I was extremely fortunate all those years I traveled uninsured. The risk of having an accident that cost me an arm and a leg or worse—my life—weighed heavy on me.

The day I realized travel insurance wasn’t about me as much as it is about the people around me that would have to take care of my debt if something major did happen to me abroad because 1) I couldn’t afford to or 2) because I’m no longer breathing in this body, is the day I signed up for SafetyWing and never looked back.

I’ve now been insured by SafetyWing since the summer of 2018!

The $40 per month is affordable enough that going without it just feels like an excuse at this point, lol. I probably spend more on photo editing subscriptions each month than I do life-saving, debt-preventing medical travel insurance. When you put that into perspective… 😬

In this review, I will be sharing all about the who, what, and why behind SafetyWing. Is it the right digital nomad travel insurance for you, too?

Let’s find out…!

Who Is SafetyWing?

The remote team behind SafetyWing is made up of about thirty-ish digital nomads scattered across the world over three continents. The founders themselves are nomads, and so, they are truly preaching what they practice through their products.

Right now, SafetyWing has three programs to support and provide that “global safety net” for nomads:

  • Nomad Insurance (what I use) — Global travel medical insurance for nomads
  • Remote Health (Nomads) — Global health insurance for remote workers and nomads
  • Remote Health (Teams) — Global health insurance for remote companies

Below, we’ll learn more about Nomad Insurance specifically; who it’s for and what it covers.

Important Note: The Nomad Insurance is a travel medical incident insurance—it covers medical and travel emergencies, but not general doctor visits, check-ups, etc. If you are a full-time nomad, you should consider the Remote Health (Nomads) option as this is the one that offers comprehensive health insurance for nomads living abroad (est. $200/mo).

What SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Offers

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is designed to cover both your immediate medical health needs (i.e. hospitalization, intensive care, COVID-19, etc, but excluding high-risk sports, pre-existing conditions, and cancer treatment) and unforeseen travel mishaps such as flight delays, lost checked luggage, emergency responses, natural disasters, and personal liability—all while outside your home country.*

*Includes 15-day coverage for quick trips back home to the United States or 30 days for anywhere else.

Its coverage is fairly basic—but it covers the “big oh sh*t” moments pretty fully. Do take note of the fact that there’s a $250 deductible for medical needs and $0 for travel interruptions or disasters.

The $250 deductible can be a little annoying to reach before getting reimbursed, but it’s not really that much considering what medical bills could cost out of pocket without insurance. Once, Paul tried to file a claim for a diagnostic test (to get his heart scanned) in Mexico, so, while it wasn’t cheap, it didn’t surpass the $250 deductible and he couldn’t get reimbursed. Just something to keep in mind!

Safetywing Nomad Insurance vs. Remote Health?

As I mentioned before, the cost to be protected against the major sh*tshow accidents only costs $40/4 weeks and renews like a monthly subscription (meaning you can cancel whenever). That’s why Nomad Insurance is the best for just getting the basics taken care of! It’s so affordable and flexible.

In comparison, the Remote Health (Nomads) estimate (when I put my details in) would cost $205/month with a 12-month commitment, and that’s because it’s comprehensive health insurance instead of medical incident insurance. Meaning, your dental fillings, eye exam, and even cancer treatment would be covered under this plan.

With our ever-increasing world of remote workers, nomads are no longer “one and the same.”

Now, we have nomads who live abroad for longer periods of time, nomads who work for themselves, remote workers who work for a company back home, and entire startups and companies whose team is fully remote.

There’s a lot of us, which creates a lot of different lifestyles and needs!

SafetyWing has a “safety net” for all of us through Nomad Insurance and their Remote Health plans for nomads and/or companies.

My adventures and travels are changing every week and month, and I need an insurance that moves with me! If this is you, too, then don’t wait — sign up to SafetyWing today.

Filing a claim is simple, too. You just need to fill out a claims form and upload it to their WorldTrips’ online portal, along with photos or receipts. If you need assistance, you can quickly reach out to the dedicated email for claims under each insurance plan or get in touch over the phone.

So? In summary, SafetyWing is, in my opinion, one of the best (if not the) best travel insurance for digital nomads on the market because it is transparent in its offer, affordable, and fairly comprehensive in its coverage (on all plans).

Tips from a long-time nomad ⬇️✨ 💻 WORKIN Tips from a long-time nomad ⬇️✨

💻 WORKING ONLINE
While not all nomads/remote workers have online-specific jobs, it’s the easiest way to sustain an income for full-time or long-term travel. Here are some jobs you can do as a digital nomad!

• Blogging (This is what I do full-time!)
• Content Creation / Brand Sponsorship
• Virtual Assisting
• Social Media Management
• YouTube or Podcasting
• Graphic / Web Design
• Coding / Development
• Photography / Videography
• Freelance Writing (How I started)
• Marketing / Amazon FBA / Ecommerce

📍PICKING YOUR DIGITAL NOMAD DESTINATION
There are many countries out there offering digital nomad visas, but you don’t even need one to just travel as a tourist and stay in-country for 30, 60, 90, or 180 days. Nomads go everywhere as long as there’s a Wi-Fi connection, some countries you may consider are Portugal, Mexico, Costa Rica, Thailand, Vietnam, Croatia, Canada, Colombia, Indonesia, Brazil, and beyond! Even lesser-known places such as Namibia are starting to offer nomad visas to entice long-term travelers to visit.

🏡 FINDING HOUSING ABROAD
Read my blog post for the full guide on this, but basically, check local Facebook groups for renting local housing for extended stays and then use Airbnbs for shorter stays or to negotiate longer contracts with the owner. There are even more “nomad rental websites” these days to make finding accommodation even easier. Don’t overlook co-living/working spaces too like Selina where the digital nomad community tends to congregate.

💛 EXPLORING LOCALLY/RESPONSIBLY
As always, be mindful and respectful when you visit these communities. Many small towns are struggling with rapid growth and overdevelopment so be mindful of your choices of where you stay, how you spend your money, and who you support.

My best advice + detailed guides are all on the blog, free for you to use! Let me know if you have any questions about digital nomad life!

Lastly, don’t overthink it. Moving countries isn’t as intimidating as you may think! It’s become second nature for us now after several years! 🐈‍⬛💃🌎✨
I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to discover t I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to discover this incredible country beyond the resorts and beaches, having lived temporarily in 5 out of the 32 Mexican states (Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Chiapas, Oaxaca, and now Baja California Sur) as a digital nomad who’s been slow traveling/living in and out of Mexico since 2018.

There is so, so much cultural and natural beauty in Mexico — I wish more people could experience this country for themselves and not through the eyes of the media.

***Please visit Mexico as a digital nomad (or tourist in general) responsibly and mindfully. Stay local, eat local, drink local, shop local, support local. Leave No Trace and be conscious of your choices and impact!***

Here are the cities/towns we’ve slow traveled/lived in for extended stays.

• Oaxaca City — a colorful, historic open museum rich in indigenous culture and gastronomy
• San Cristóbal de las Casas — an endearing pueblo mágico in the Chiapas Highlands
• La Paz — the capital city of BCS teeming with marine life, diving, fish tacos, and desert vibes
• San Pancho — an eco-conscious town in Nayarit famous for its sunsets and community
• Tulum — no introduction needed (and I wouldn’t go back here as a nomad due to overdevelopment)

Other great cities/towns/destinations for digital nomads are:

• Guadalajara (state of Jalisco)
• Santiago de Querétaro (state of Querétaro)
• San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato City (state of Guanajuato)
• Playa del Carmen (state of Quintana Roo)
• Valladolid or Mérida (state of Yucatán)
• México City/CDMX (state of México)
• Sayulita (state of Nayarit)
• Puerto Vallarta (state of Jalisco)
• Puerto Escondido (state of Oaxaca)

I’d love to know what you think about Mexico and where you’ve been in the comments! 🇲🇽💛

And for the detailed guide of 13 places to live/visit, read my blog @bucketlistbri .com (just type in “places to live mexico” in the quick search bar if you can’t find the post under my “Mexico” category).

PSA: Your anxiety, problems or (bad) habits will f PSA: Your anxiety, problems or (bad) habits will follow you around the world until you face them no matter how much you travel or move countries 🙃

I know I’m not the only one that feels restless at times and idolizes moving to a new region/country/continent to shake my feelings of anxiety or self-doubt or fear! (Also, I tend to think about moving to another country even when I just moved to a new one 😅)

I know because I have lived abroad for 8+ years. I used to try to drown out my icky feelings and past traumas with lots of alcohol but now I carry them with me like I do my mismatched socks — they add to the quirkiness and remind me I don’t have to be, and am not, perfect.

And that life is more interesting that way, anyway.

Anddd that most importantly, whenever I get lost, I can and will be found again — I just may look and think differently after new adventures but I am still loved and never lost forever 🧦 ✨💛

In sum, whether you travel full-time or not, take care of yourself ✨💛
